Daniel Walter Hill is an avid outdoorsman and has spent thousands of hours capturing nature’s beauty through the art of photography. Daniel became enamored with photography at a young age. Coming from a family that loves wildlife and travel, Daniel Walter Hill grew up documenting the magnificent scenery of North America.
North America is home to some of the most incredible parks on Earth. Places like Yellowstone and Yosemite are a photographer’s dream. Canyons, geysers, and majestic forests offer breathtaking photo ops regardless of the season or time of day.
Daniel Hill shares some tips on capturing the beauty of North America’s magnificent national parks.
Be an Early Bird
If you love wildlife, the mornings are ideal for getting an excellent shot as this is when they are most active. Pair this with an epic sunrise, and you could end up with a Pulitzer.
Dusk is Just as Special
There is something special about light just before dusk. It enhances everything to 4K quality. Photographers refer to this as the “golden hour,” and it’s the perfect time for all types of photography.
Polarize
A polarizing camera filter adjusts the balance of light and limits glare. In addition, it will increase the vibrance and color, creating brilliant outdoor images.
The Rule of Thirds
Frame your subjects using the “rule of thirds” – in other words, place your subject off-center to get the best perspective. It’s also wise to keep the sun behind you; otherwise, you will have dark silhouettes and a glaring background.
Go Vintage
Sometimes black and white or sepia filters bring something very special to the finished product.
There is No Such Thing as Too Many Photos.
There is no excuse for not taking more photos than you need in the age of digital photography. Experiment. Try different filters, perspectives, and zoom ratios. You can always delete the flops and end up with some surprise gems.
Respect Nature
No close-up is worth getting too close to a wild animal or a dangerous drop. Also, bear in mind that you are in their territory, and they have every right to treat an unwelcomed guest with contempt.
Life Through a Lens
Don’t spend your entire trip behind your lens and miss out on an incredible experience. America’s parks are magnificent and memorable, so take in as much as you can with the naked eye.
